Mount Rainier’s Timed Entry Reservation System

Filed in: Personal Posts

Mount Rainier National Park, with its views, meadows, and peaks, is an exclusive dream destination for elopements. As a seasoned Washington elopement photographer, I assure you that capturing your moments against this backdrop will be an unforgettable and exclusive experience. However, with the park’s new timed entry reservation system, some planning is required to ensure a smooth and stress-free day. Thankfully, I’ve got all the details to make sure our experience is seamless.

Understanding the Timed Entry Reservation System

In response to increased visitation and environmental concerns, Mount Rainier National Park has introduced a timed entry reservation system for two key areas. Those areas are the Paradise and Sunrise Corridor. This system, in effect from May 24 through September 2, 2024, is a testament to the park’s commitment to reduce congestion and protect its fragile ecosystems.

I know it can seem annoying, but as someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, I respect our state for doing something to protect our land. And, with the timed entry system, the benefit to us is less people in the park crowding spaces and ruining views.

Securing Your Reservation

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make a reservation on Recreation.gov. First, visit the website and navigate to the Mount Rainier National Park page. Next, select the ‘Timed Entry Reservation’ option. Then, choose your desired corridor and date. Finally, complete the reservation process by providing your personal information and payment details. Reservations are released in advance. For the Paradise Corridor, reservations open in three blocks: February 21 for late May through June, April 1 for July, and May 1 for August. For the Sunrise Corridor, reservations open on April 1 for July and May 1 for August. Additionally, next-day reservations are available at 7:00 pm PT each day during the reservation period.

Planning Your Elopement Day

To make the most of your elopement:

  • Choose Your Corridor: Decide whether the lush meadows of Paradise or the alpine beauty of Sunrise better fits your vision. Each area offers unique photo opportunities. I can show examples of both and help you pick the perfect spot to tell your story. Part of that might depend on the time of year and time of day you’d like to elope.
  • Book Early: Secure your timed entry reservation as soon as it becomes available to ensure you get your desired date and time.
  • Consider Alternatives: If reservations are full, there’s no need to worry. You can still enter the park before 7:00 am or after 3:00 pm when reservations are not required. Alternatively, other park areas like Ohanapecosh or Mowich Lake, which do not require reservations, are ready to welcome you. This flexibility ensures that your elopement day remains stress-free and enjoyable.

Additional Tips

  • Permits and Fees: Remember that a park entrance fee or valid park pass is also required in addition to your timed entry reservation. If you have lodging, camping, or a permit is required for your ceremony, these will substitute for a timed entry reservation.
  • Photography Permits: Check if you need a particular use permit for professional photography within the park. I can help figure this out!
  • Stay Flexible: Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. Have a backup plan and be prepared for various conditions. If the weather at your chosen corridor is not ideal for your elopement, consider these alternative locations within the park: Sunrise and Tipsoo Lake as well as Alder Lake. These areas offer their own unique beauty and can provide a stunning backdrop for your elopement photos.
